A Little History:
The Staff of Aesculapius is the historical Symbol of
Healing & Medicine. This Symbol is a Staff with a Single Snake
entwined around the Staff.
The Wand of Hermes(Greek) or Mercury(Roman) is the
Symbol of Commerce, The Messenger or Herald, Mediation, Incantations,
and Alchemy. It is referred to as the Caduceus. It's symbol is a Winged
Staff with Two Snakes Entwined about it. It became popular in America
as a Medical Emblem in 1902, when the U.S. Army selected it as their
Medical Symbol. It simply looked better then the Staff of Aesculapius.
If you research the two symbols you'll find that
they both have a long history even before the time of Greece. You will
also find there are no guidelines or rules as to the forms they may
take. We present these versions of medical symbols simply for their
look.
